Seed to Feed Teen Growers Initiative

This summer we are launching the Seed to Feed Teen Growers Program! One of the goals of Seed to Feed has always been to educate, especially youth, about gardening and nutrition. In our community, many youth don’t have access to fresh produce and have no idea where their food comes from, let alone how to grow produce. The Seed to Feed Teen Growers Program will offer education, mentorship, and a meaningful paid summer job for up to 8 teens living in Elkhart. Through this six-week internship program, youth will practice gardening and job skills like leadership, teamwork, responsibility, and communication in safe outdoor learning environments.

We will be partnering with Goshen College’s Merry Lea Environmental Center to have a college intern help our Seed to Feed coordinator plan the curriculum and supervise the youth interns. Every week, the teens will work in Seed to Feed gardens, participate in fun educational sessions, and go on field day visits to other local farms as a way to learn about a more localized and equitable food system. By participating, youth will learn how to be positive change agents in our community.

We are so excited about the potential of this program, but we can’t do it without YOUR help! The Seed to Feed gardening community has made such an impact on the lives of pantry guests. Now, together, let’s make an impact on the lives of youth in our community.
